Taste the Yorke

Regional | Seasonal | Local

From small beginnings, Taste The Yorke started from the passion and inspiration of locally sourced produce and seasonal freshness combined in a rustic Cafe setting!

Jo’s vision emerged into a bustling little cafe, starting in a smaller premises on George Street before moving to the iconic  building, formally “Roach & Son’s”  family butchers.  This location had been a prominent cafe for several years, and when the opportunity presented itself to move to this larger building, Jo saw the potential to grow their catering service and expand the selection of locally sourced wares. Their collection of retail products include candles, bags, handcrafted bread boards, locally made skin care as well as jams and chutneys.

With the recent closures of many businesses and the effects from Covid-19, Jo has also started playing again, making house made butter and quince paste, which will become a staple retail item in her retail “Pantry”.

Moonta held a special place in Jo’s heart after holidaying here as a child with her family, she enjoyed the relaxed beach side atmosphere, and later in her mid twenties, Jo’s late Mum, spent time walking the beach,  it was always a place to come and just get away from it all…

In 2014 Jo left her State Sales manager role with Redken, and decided a sea change was what her and her young son Sam needed.  Moonta was the perfect fit. Close distance to family and friends in Adelaide, but far enough away to raise a small young boy in a local community.

Jo employs eight locals and the bond they share is evident in the following testimonials.

“The bond between staff and community is one of my favourite things about working here!” – Liv

“I love that we sell local produce, and I love that I have built friendships with our customers.” – Tahlia

“It’s not just a job, it’s about getting to know the customers and helping to make their day better!” – Dannii

Supporting local businesses and the involvement in events and new tourism opportunities, has seen Taste The Yorke become the ‘go to cafe’ for local produce and a great coffee from locals and tourists alike!

George Street and Moonta traders are also an integral part of the success of this little cafe.  George Street Traders are all “open for business”, with many shops open 7 days and servicing the community and their return visitors. This means we have the opportunity to provide a great street feel and a buzz is definitely felt here, especially on a Sunday, when the cafes and hotels and shops are open, it has a fantastic holiday feel!  Jo says, “ We are lucky, we live here”.  Her son  Sam, will tell you that she has been known to quote  often “ people pay lots of money to visit places like this, with our beaches and we live here and it’s our back yard!” You might even catch a Blue Swimmer crab!

With all the changes from restrictions and with the future vision in our sights, what was the normal has changed, and maybe we will see more inspiring products and produce emerging from these times, but one thing is for sure, Taste The Yorke will be here to serve you your best coffee!

From the “PANTRY” –  Rosevale Lentils, Earths Essence Skin Care, local Sticky wattleseed balsamic from Broughton River and MBC Foods, salt and pepper coatings are some of the best sellers!
